Space Trader - Modern Remake

A modernized remake of the classic Palm OS Space Trader game

Last updated: 2025-11-12

Project Overview

This project aims to recreate and modernize the beloved Palm OS game "Space Trader" (2002) - a complex trading and economic simulation game inspired by the classic space game "Elite" but without the flight simulation component.

Original Game

Space Trader is a freeware game where players navigate a procedurally generated universe, trading commodities between star systems to accumulate wealth, with the ultimate goal of purchasing a moon and retiring in luxury.

Reference Implementation: Space Trader for Android by Russell Wolf

Core Game Mechanics

1. Trading System

  • 10 different commodities traded across multiple star systems
  • Prices dynamically determined by:
    • System's technological level
    • Political system
    • Random events (shortages, surpluses, wars, etc.)
  • Economy simulation with supply/demand mechanics

2. Space Travel & Encounters

  • Travel between interconnected star systems
  • Random encounters during travel:
    • Police - Inspect cargo, enforce laws
    • Traders - Potential trade or interaction
    • Pirates - Combat or flee
  • Special rare encounters (famous captains, aliens, unique items)

3. Ship Management

  • 10 different ship types varying in:
    • Cargo capacity
    • Speed/fuel efficiency
    • Weapons/shields capacity
    • Hull strength
  • Upgradeable equipment:
    • Cargo bays
    • Weapons systems
    • Shields
    • Special gadgets

4. Reputation & Alignment

  • Police Record - Lawful to criminal
  • Reputation - Fame/notoriety
  • Actions affect future encounters and opportunities
  • Multiple playstyles supported:
    • Pure trader (legal goods only)
    • Bounty hunter (hunt pirates)
    • Pirate (attack traders, evade police)
    • Mixed approach

5. Economic Progression

  • Start with small ship and limited credits
  • Gradually upgrade to larger vessels
  • Invest in equipment and cargo capacity
  • End goal: Accumulate enough wealth to purchase a moon and retire

Level of Effort Assessment

Overall Project Complexity: HIGH

Total Estimated Time: 19-25 weeks (4.5-6 months) for a single developer

Complexity Factors:

High Complexity Components:

  1. Economic Simulation - Dynamic pricing with multiple variables
  2. Procedural Generation - Consistent, balanced galaxy generation
  3. AI Systems - Different behaviors for police, traders, pirates
  4. Combat System - Turn-based or real-time mechanics with equipment factors
  5. Balance - Ensuring fair progression and challenging gameplay

Medium Complexity Components:

  1. Save/Load System - State persistence
  2. Event System - Random events affecting markets
  3. Reputation System - Tracking player actions and consequences
  4. Ship Management - Upgrades and equipment

Lower Complexity Components:

  1. Data Models - Star systems, commodities, ships
  2. Basic Trading - Buy/sell transactions
  3. UI Framework - Menus and screens
  4. Galaxy Map - Navigation interface

Technical Challenges:

  1. Balancing Act - Economy must be engaging but not exploitable
  2. Performance - Large galaxy with many systems and calculations
  3. Replayability - Procedural generation must create varied experiences
  4. Save System - Handling complex game state
  5. AI Behavior - Making encounters feel intelligent and fair

Technology Considerations

Platform Options:

  1. Web-based (JavaScript/TypeScript + HTML5 Canvas)

    • Pros: Cross-platform, easy distribution, no installation
    • Cons: Performance constraints for large simulations
  2. Desktop (Python + Pygame, or C#/Unity, or Godot)

    • Pros: Better performance, native feel
    • Cons: Platform-specific builds needed
  3. Mobile (React Native, Flutter, or native Android/iOS)

    • Pros: True to original platform, portable
    • Cons: Touch interface design, multiple platforms

Start with Web-based prototype using TypeScript/JavaScript:

  • Rapid development and iteration
  • Easy testing and sharing
  • Can be ported to desktop/mobile later
  • Modern web tech handles game complexity well

Success Criteria

Minimum Viable Product (MVP):

  • Galaxy with 20+ star systems
  • 10 commodities with dynamic pricing
  • 5+ ship types
  • Basic trading workflow
  • Travel between systems
  • Random encounters (basic)
  • Save/load game
  • Win condition (buy moon)

Full Feature Release:

  • All 10 ship types
  • Complete combat system
  • Quest system
  • Special encounters
  • Polished UI
  • Tutorial system
  • Statistics and achievements

Development Approach

  1. Incremental Development - Build feature by feature
  2. Playtest Early - Test economy and balance frequently
  3. Modular Design - Keep systems decoupled
  4. Data-Driven - Use JSON/config files for game data
  5. Version Control - Git for all development
